External Cohesion

External cohesion in the context of leading an organisation is about equipping leaders with the skills and capabilities necessary to build and manage the organisation’s relationships with its external stakeholders—investors, customers, partners, the communities in which the organisation is based, and society in general.

This will require a commitment to cooperation, and the ability to build empathic relationships.

There are three specific areas that leaders need to focus on in this regard:

  • Social responsibility: The organisation’s relationships with the local communities where the organisation is located, and society in general.
  • Ethical leadership: The organisation’s relationships with society and the impact on investors—lapses in ethics almost always lead to financial losses.
